Joan Marter is an American art critic, author, and the president of the Dorothy Dehner Foundation. A distinguished professor emerita of contemporary painting and sculpture at Rutgers University, Dr. Marter is prolific art historian and contributor to the scholarship of women in the arts. She has written and edited numerous books and catalogues, including the five-volume Grove Encyclopedia of American Art, as well as the exhibition and accompanying catalogue, Women of Abstract Expressionism, held at the Denver Art Museum in 2016. She is the current editor-in-chief of the Women's Art Journal
